Hong Kong Awards for Industries (HKAI): Invitation for Entries

The 2009 HKAI, championed by the HKSAR Government, is now inviting entries. Companies from the manufacturing and services sectors are welcome to join. The closing date for entries is 31 July 2009.

Full Implementation of Race Discrimination Ordinance (RDO)

The RDO and the related framework to promote racial equality and eliminate racial discrimination came into full operation on 10 July 2009. It is unlawful to discriminate, harass or vilify a person on the ground of his/her race. The RDO offers protection in several areas, including the following:

  • Employment
  • Education
  • Provision of goods, facilities or services
  • Disposal or management of premises
  • Eligibility to vote for and to stand for election to public bodies, etc.
  • Offering of a pupilage or tenancy in a barrister's chambers
  • Participation in clubs

Alongside the RDO, the Code of Practice on Employment under the RDO gives practical guidance to help employers, employees and other concerned parties understand their rights and responsibilities under the RDO and encourage them to adopt good practices to promote racial equality and harmony in the workplace.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) is responsible for enforcing the RDO. The EOC hotline for enquiries and complaints is 2511 8211.

Commercial Information Circulars (CICs) of the Mainland

The Trade and Industry Department issued a number of Commercial Information Circulars (CIC) on the Mainland's trade and economic rules and regulations between 29 June and 8 July 2009 for traders' reference, including the following:

  • Allocation of Quotas for Exports of Wheat Flour and Rice Flour to Hong Kong and Macao in the Second Half of 2009 (CIC No. 329/2009);
  • "Administrative Measures on the Special Funds of Central Finance for Promoting the Development of Service Industries" (CIC No. 336/2009);
  • Pilot Reform on Customs Clearance of Export Goods by Classification (CIC No. 337/2009);
  • Exemption of 14 Administrative Charges for Enterprises in Provincial Industrial Relocation Parks in the Guangdong Province (CIC No. 339/2009);
  • Administrative Rules on Pilot Programme of Renminbi Settlement of Cross-border Trade Transactions (CIC No. 348/2009);

Hong Kong Mould & Die Council Awards 2009: Operation Excellence in Mould and Die Manufacturing

These awards are organised by the Hong Kong Mould & Die Council. The Trade and Industry Department is a supporting organisation. The awards aim to enhance the mould and die industry's competitiveness in the international market, raise awareness and understanding of the community on the achievements and contribution of the industry, encourage and recognise companies and organisations that have attained excellent performance in mould and die manufacturing. Catering Industry Safety Award Scheme: Invitation for Entries

This award scheme is jointly organised by the Labour Department, the Occupational Safety and Health Council and eight co-organisers. It aims to enhance the occupational safety and health awareness of employers, employees and stakeholders in the industry, inculcate an occupational safety and health culture in the industry and the public, and award the good performances in work safety and health of catering establishments, supervisors and workers. Local catering establishments are welcome to join. The closing date for entries is 22 July 2009.
