Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I obtain more details/background information about a company before having any business transactions with it?
Members of the public may, on payment of the prescribed document fee, apply to the Business Registration Office of the Inland Revenue Department for the issue of an extract of information on the business register in respect of a specified business. An extract of information provides details of the business and its operator. The applicants are required to provide the business registration number and the business name of the target business. If the applicants do not know the business registration number of the target business, they may look it up from the self-service Business Registration Number Enquiry System provided by the Business Registration Office at 4/F of Revenue Tower. Users of the system are required to input the full name of the business in either English or Chinese and to specify its location by inputting one of three area codes representing Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories. Results of the search will be instantly available on the screen. For details, please visit the website of Inland Revenue Department at http://www.ird.gov.hk/eng/tax/bre_brd.htm. For local limited companies or non-Hong Kong companies registered under the Companies Ordinance, company search can be conducted at the Companies Registry's Cyber Search Centre (http://www.icris.cr.gov.hk) or the Companies Registry's Public Search Centre on the 13th floor of Queensway Government Offices, 66 Queensway, Hong Kong. For details on the electronic search services and search fees, please download the Companies Registry's information pamphlets "How to Obtain Company Information" (http://www.cr.gov.hk/en/publications/docs/10-e.pdf) and "Price Guide to Main Services" (http://www.cr.gov.hk/en/publications/docs/3-e.pdf) at the Companies Registry's website or contact the Public Search Section of the Companies Registry at 2867 2571.
